Abstract
- The Single Market is a political and economic success story of European integration, and central to the European Union’s competitiveness and prosperity. Its effective functioning depends on the rule of law as the conditio sine qua non: the rule of law is the foundation for mutual trust and economic cooperation among the Member States. However, rule-of-law backsliding in some member states threatens not only the EU’s foundational values but also its economic potential. The paper examines how illiberalism undermines the rule of law and breaches Single Market rules, and sets out recommendations for more effectively safeguarding both in the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028–2034.
