Abstract
The high income inequality in Europe, which for a long time had been decreasing, experienced a remarkable comeback during the crisis: missing catch-up growth in poorer Member States and risen inequality within the states lead to a stagnation in the former decreasing trend. Heading back towards more convergence is only possible if poorer Member States return to growth and the euro-crisis countries manage to escape the austerity trap.
