The publication „Towards Socially Just Development in the MENA-Region” intends to rekindle debate on economic policy, leftist critique of the economic order and the relation of social justice and economic policy choices in the Middle East and North Africa. Distinguished scholars from the region have worked on chapters ranging from trade and fiscal policies to employment, social protection, investment and environment. Prof. Gilbert Achcar has contributed an analysis of the effects of neoliberal economic policy in the region. All chapters of the book contain analysis, but mainly focus to show potential alternatives and steps forward towards social justice. Only new economic thinking can show a way out of the economic long-term crisis of the region and the political deadlock manifest in most countries of the region. This book understands itself as a first informed comment on economic debate, hoping to provoke larger discussions of the topic.
