This research analyses how the landscape and situation of civil society organizations and movements related to women and families in Hungary changed under the Fidesz government since 2010, a time the authors call the „period of democratic decline”. The analysis focuses on five central dimensions of civil society change: policy influence, capacities and funding, strategies, coalitions and networks, claims and framing. The results show that civil society related to family and women’s issues has been greatly transformed in the past ten years, intensifying divisions and fragmentations among its actors. Government-friendly organizations became more dependent on the government, are however thriving and could record real accomplishments as well as mobilizing potential. Meanwhile disfavoured and oppositional groups are discovering new forms of alliances and activities, also reaching over to the business sphere and engaging in a more comprehensive understanding of social problems related to gender.
