In the next ten years, the cooperation with African countries should play a more important role in German foreign policy than in previous decade. Elsewhere, the possible effects of global megatrends are still being discussed as a problem of the future, while in African countries they are already being felt. It is therefore a priority for a new German Africa policy to win over African partners for joint responses to global challenges of the future. Equitable access to vaccines, a stronger support to African democracies, jointly addressing the climate crisis, and new opportunities for dialogue in regions experiencing armed conflict would all be important impulses. It would also be advantageous for the new German federal government to focus less strongly on foreign direct investment, migration, and counter-terrorism in its Africa policy, and instead focus more on the political and social participation of those who have so far been absent from the negotiating table on future cooperation, but who are likely to have greater success in opposing the current governments in the foreseeable future.
