Latvias energy dependence is generally below the EU average. Imports from Russia concerned essentially natural gas and diesel. In 2022, EU-sanctions and the national decisions to diminish the role of imported energy resources did not result in the immediate end of economic transactions with Russia. Record prices were paid for electricity and natural gas imports while restructuring was put in place. These price signals played a significant role in reducing energy consumption without experiencing any physical supply shortages during the winter. It is only from 2023 when financial and physical flows of energy will have fundamentally been switched away from Russia. Numerous new projects were initiated to approach the future landscape of a climate-neutral energy system.
