Zusammenfassung
Inequality in Europe, which has always been underestimated by the EU and Eurostat, grew again between 2009 and 2010. Previously, catch-up growth on the poorer periphery had reduced inequality, even though it increased within most countries. But even in the Great Recession of 2009 inequality decreased, due to better income distribution within the domestic economies on account of falling profits and still slightly higher growth in the poorer countries. Thus in 2009 it reached a low of 8.5 (around the level of the United States in 2000), only to rise again in 2010 to 9.5. The effects of the debt crisis are still unclear: although inequality is increasing in the debtor countries, per capita income is generally falling in Spain and Ireland which hitherto belonged among the rich countries.
