Zusammenfassung
In recent years it has become more and more acknowledged that participatory and deliberative experiments are an integral part of Latin Americas democratization process. A number of countries have taken a pragmatic turn in their democratization, which consists in the attempt to correct some of the alleged failures of representative institutions with participatory and deliberative innovations as well as to achieve social ends which the representative institutions assumingly will not be able to accomplish. The escalation of political experimentalism in Latin America raises important questions about assessments of the quality of democracy. Once the validity of the new, experimental model of democracy is recognized, Latin America could provide new and more creative recipes to enhance the quality of democracy elsewhere.
