Zusammenfassung
The aim of this study is to identify, if in the case of Mozambique the political participation of women leads to greater gender equality and social-economic empowerment for women in the country. It is argued that the Mozambican case seems to demonstrate that a fairly high percentage of women participation in the higher-level political decision-making bodies has not yet translated into a more equal position of women in general within the society, nor has it strengthened gender equality in their social-economic life. The study identifies Mozambiques strong patriarchal culture, the ruling partys demands for loyalty and individual interest- and benefit-seeking as some of the underlying reasons for the low impact of these women on gender equality. The author concludes that the civil society movement for gender equality seems to be the most promising force to overcome the existing obstacles. The continued engagement of women organizations is able to improve the empowerment of women in political decision-making positions, leading to a greater empowerment of women as a whole.
