Zusammenfassung
In the last four decades there has been an exponential growth of the Central American immigrant population in the United States, especially those from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. The labor participation of this population is very significant for the economy of the United States, due to the fact that they usually work in agricultural activities and in services and care of people. Likewise, this population has also had an outstanding participation in the trade union movement. Despite all this, the growing criminalization of migration is putting at risk their chances of regularizing their migratory status, even more problematic in front of the foreign policy promoted by President Trump, which, among other things, recently canceled some protection programs for immigrants.
However, long before the change of administration of the United States government, various social organizations, trade unions and even state governments have created programs of assistance, advice and accompaniment to the migrant population and, instead of abandoning these efforts in view of the new context, these organizations have shown a strong position in giving continuity to these programs, and various cities within the country have ratified their status as "sanctuary cities" for the immigrant population.
