Zusammenfassung
The Greek governments response to Covid-19 was horizontal and gender-neutral. The lockdowns exacerbated gender employment and unemployment gaps and made young, migrant and precariously employed women more vulnerable in the labour market. The care workload increased as a result of the extensive closures of schools and kindergartens, and although men began spending more hours on care, the care gap between men and women worsened. Gender-based violence also increased during the lockdowns. Despite awareness raising the government failed to adopt an effective policy to prevent gender-based violence. In general, the pandemic state of emergency was used to legitimize the marginalization of gender issues and the silencing of voices pointing out the risks that women would have to face as consequences of rising gender inequality.
