STUDY Trade Unions in Transformation Trade Union Movement and Democracy in Indonesia: 2010, 2014, and Beyond SURYA TJANDRA August 2017 n In its efforts to become an effective political power, the Indonesian trade union movement has had variable success when it comes to two campaigns – the social security campaign in 2010 and the involvement in electoral politics in the legislative and presidential elections in 2014. n These two campaigns provide important lessons on how to build coalitions, the role of leadership and the importance of internal democracy in the trade union’s quest to present itself as an alternative political power in Indonesia. n Trade Unions in Transformation is an FES project that identifies unions’ power re­sources and capabilities that contribute to successful trade union action. This study features among two dozen case studies from around the world demonstrating how unions have transformed to get stronger.
