TRADE UNIONS IN TRANSFORMATION 4.0 LABOUR AND SOCIAL JUSTICE RIDING ON A UNION APP Uganda’s Public Transport Workers’ Digital Response to Platforms Erick Manga, Paula Hamilton, Stephenson Kisingu September 2020 The public transport sector in Uganda is rapidly changing through liberalisation pro­cesses, increasing informality and the entrance of multina­tional platform companies. In response, the Amalgamated Transport and General Work­ers’ Union(ATGWU) has start­ed to implement its own dig­ital applications to compete with Uber and other platforms. The union’s digitalisation strat­egy has proven to be a useful means of increasing participa­tion, strengthening infrastruc­tural resources and providing service to the growing mem­bership of informal workers.
