REPORT SOCIOECOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION IN ROMANIA Attitudes, Interests, and Concerns of Different Social Groups Romanian citizens consider climate change a very important societal issue, placing it significantly above the average level of concern in 19 other European and North American countries. However, environmental protection still ranks behind other societal priorities such as health, education, pensions, and jobs. Among the actors capable of pro tecting the environment, Romanians place the greatest responsibility on the government. Surprisingly, the private sector, despite its significant environmental impact due to largescale resource exploitation, ranks only in third place—just behind individual citizens, a group with a much smaller environmental footprint. While citizens are open to participating in these changes, they do so with certain conditions.
