His campaign promi­ses included mass deportation of“illegal” immigrants, in­creasing import tariffs and action to curb Chinese en­gagement in the region. Deportations would cause hu­manitarian crises while the as­sociated loss of remittances would lead to economic and political instability in affected countries. Pressure on Latin American governments to re­ject China may generate unex­pected tensions. Authoritarian politicians in Latin America will emulate attacks on de­mocracy in the United States. Democratic actors in Latin America, the United States and Europe need to come up with shared strategies to resist the rise of the far right.
