Modernising Journalists’ Trade Unions in Pakistan for the Digital Age A Mapping of Challenges, Needs, and Solutions Better Resource Mobilisation To improve resource mobilisation, unions should explore diverse funding sources beyond membership dues, such as grants, partnerships with NGOs, or crowdfunding initiatives. Successful examples from various global unions highlight the effectiveness of these strategies. Furthermore, creating resource-sharing networks among unions can help them exchange best practices for fundraising. Improving Democracy Within Unions Unions need to ensure regular, transparent elections for leadership positions and consider implementing term limits to encourage fresh ideas and perspectives. Facilitating town hall meetings where members can voice their concerns and suggest initiatives will enhance democratic engagement within the union. Fixed Term Limits Implementing fixed term limits for elected officials can enhance accountability and prevent the entrenchment of power. By establishing clear timeframes for how long individuals can serve in specific positions, voters are given more opportunities to evaluate performance and make informed choices. A majority of the respondents(189) said that digitised electoral process for transparency can ensure fair elections in the unions, 87 replied pluralistic and participatory elections can do this while the remaining 70 said that term limits for the office holders can ensure fair elections.
