Abstract
- Following the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, Iran made its relationship with China a crucial part of its foreign policy, signing a 25-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021. While aiming to foster economic cooperation with China via the Belt and Road Initiative, SCO and BRICS+, Iran also welcomes a stronger presence of China in the Middle East as a counterforce against US presence in the region. This paper illuminates the context and facets of Iran's realignment toward China, perceptions of China in Iranian domestic politics as well as the future role of China as envisioned by Iran.
