Abstract
  • China has been Lebanon's largest trading partner, with a keen interest in investing in the country' infrastructure and connecting Lebanon to Syria as a key geo-economic objective. Avoiding direct involvement in Lebanese politics and providing substantial material support to the country, China has been deemed a viable alternative to Western influence by some in Lebanon, while it is viewed with skepticism by others. This paper traces the role China has come to play for and in Lebanon, as well as how this relationship may unfold in the future, with close attention to further implications for the region.
