Since 2018, southern Syria has become a global hub for Captagon production and trafficking, fueling widespread substance abuse and regional instability. Amidst the Assad regime's complicity in the trade, grassroots efforts in Daraa and Sweida are leading the fight against drugs, blending non-violent initiatives with community-led security measures. This policy brief explores these underreported actions, the challenges they face, and their impact on reducing drug consumption and trafficking. Drawing on exclusive interviews with local stakeholders, it offers key recommendations to strengthen these initiatives and address the escalating crisis.
