Although climate concern is widespread in Denmark, Germany, and Sweden, turning this concern into support for expensive climate policies and personal behavior changes is challenging. This is especially true when such policies impose financial burdens on individual consumption, particularly for low-income groups. The report shows that sociodemographic factors such as education, income, and urban/rural residence significantly influence attitudes and support for the climate transition. The key to a successful climate transition is finding a balance between the ambitious climate policies demanded by university-educated, middle-class populations in cities and the redistributive measures needed to support those with fewer resources, who are more hesitant in their support for the social-ecological transition. It concludes that in order to gain broader support and succeed, the climate transition must be a just transition.
