Abstract
- The paper explores the potentials of Bangladeshi exports to the European Union market. Bangladesh has benefitted from Chinas declining market share in non-cotton garments and can further expand that segment. The related home garment, footwear and leather markets also show greater potential than realized. Other sectors with comparative advantages are agricultural products (vegetables, tobacco, nuts, seeds, taro, and others), cultivated fish and seafood (carp, shrimp, crab, prawn), light engineering (bicycles). Ceramics and plastics are also promising. The authors make recommendations on various levels: economic policy, sector specific issues, and international relations. They identify anti-export incentives in trade policy, deficits in industry regulation, needs for infrastructure investments, and necessary modalities of EU market access.
