Zusammenfassung
- This study maps Bangladesh’s emerging textile waste recycling ecosystem across five major clusters – Adamdighi (Bogura), Keraniganj (Dhaka), Gaibandha (Gaibandha), Saidpur (Nilphamari), and Char Matha Mor (Pabna). It reveals that approximately 19,800 micro and small enterprises employ roughly 396,000 people and process 156 million kg of industrial waste annually, diverting nearly 130 million kg from landfills while generating BDT 16.3 billion in gross turnover. Beyond diverting waste into reusable goods and home textiles, the sector avoids around 390,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions per year, positioning it as a key climate-mitigation asset. However, with 72 per cent of firms generating under BDT 10 million in turnover, the sub-sector remains heavily informal and constrained by limited finance, technology, and formal regulations like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The paper underscores the strategic need to formalize and scale these low-capital ventures, transforming "jhut" (waste) into a driver of green growth, sustainable employment, and circular RMG manufacturing.
