Zusammenfassung
The Russian invasion of Ukraine highlighted Germanys dependency of fossil fuels. Prior to the war, an approximate 34 % of the mineral oil, 53.6 % of the natural gas, and 50 % of hard coal supplies to Germany originated from Russian sources. As of 2023, however, Germany is independent from Russian energy imports. Reducing the gas consumption became a mayor instrument to ensure energy security for the winter. Gas consumption was reduced by 19.4% (August 2022 to January 2023). Fossil fuels from Russia were substituted by imports from other countries-(especially LNG and Norwegian pipeline gas) and by the increased use of coal fired power plants. In the long term, the crisis will accelerate the transition to a new energy system based on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
