Abstract
Poor work-life balance in endemic in the UK with high levels of burnout and minimal transfer of productivity gains into reductions in working time. Reducing working time in popular, is linked to better health and wellbeing and also has wider economic benefits. This paper assesses the working time situation in the UK and looks to the German example for inspiration, where stronger social security, higher productivity and more entrenched collective bargaining structures lead to comparatively better outcomes.
