Zusammenfassung
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the ready-made garment industry and garment workers' livelihoods. In the first two months after Bangladesh identified the first COVID-19 patient on 8 March 2020, US$3.16 billion worth of orders for 1,140 factories were cancelled, according to BGMEA. This media tracking study was conducted to understand better the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the ready-made garments industry. From the study, we found that despite having at least two-thirds of female workers, their voices from the sector and trade unions are still fewer in Bangladesh's media. This study focuses on the role of female leaders and the statements of women in the RMG sector. It highlights that there is still a lack of female leader representation in decision-making and in negotiating with the government. Despite this, the review also indicates that female trade unions leaders led activities to ensure workers' rights and well-being in the first part of the COVID-19 pandemic period.
