Zusammenfassung
Family laws have been a common obstacle for women in the MENA region when striving for a life of dignity and equality. Although family laws that govern family matters such as marriage, divorce, custody and maintenance differ from country to country, most are entrenched in patriarchal thinking that perpetuates discrimination and continuously reproduces the imbalance of power between women and men. This study seeks to shed light on these family laws in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, the Palestinian Territories, Sudan, Syria and Tunisia. Each article in the study looks at the origins of the law in the respective country as well as recent reforms, current debates, proposed feminist reforms, and where the governments and different interest groups stand on the issue.
