During the height of the 2015 refugee crisis, Cyprus did not witness a significant rise in the number of asylum applications. However, over the last three years, Cyprus has received the largest number recorded. As a result, the governments approach has shifted towards a more restrictive migration policy, which is implemented through repressive measures. Recent changes include inter alia tougher border restrictions and fewer rights within the reception process aiming to reduce the pull factor. This report examines the refugee and migration issue in Cyprus. The text focuses on the recent increase in the number of refugees, an analysis of the countrys reception conditions, and the question of whether Cyprus is becoming in relative terms an important route for migration to and asylum in Europe.
