Zusammenfassung
The AMB Brief is a series of publications in which results of the African Media Barometers (AMB) are summarised and correlations and trends are analysed. The AMB is an analytical tool to assess the media environment, the quality of media, and the integrity of the journalists and media practitioners. The AMB report reflects a panel-discussion where media practitioners and civil society representatives discuss media issues along a set of indicators which are derived from African declarations and protocols. Three of those indicators assess the self-regulation mechanisms of the media, the integrity, and the working conditions within the media sector. The AMB Brief A Matter of Principles presents and analyses the findings gleaned from the discussions of these three indicators in 69 AMB panels that took place in 27 countries between 2005 and 2011. It has a close look at the impact that media self-regulation, journalists income and working conditions have on the integrity and professionalism of the media. It follows the hypothesis that the integrity of media practitioners is higher in countries where they can be held to accountable via self-regulatory complaints mechanisms, because ethical codes of conduct are enforced and clear moral and professional guidelines are provided. Also it is expected, that the integrity is higher where income and working conditions for media practitioners are better, because bribes or other kinds of inducements are less attractive.
