Recent data on drug addiction in the Kyrgyz Republic is alarming, the share of drug users within the population is increasing. Most notably the rising number of intravenous drug users is having highly negative effects on affected families and society as a whole. This study looks at the general situation with regard to alcohol and drug addiction in Kyrgyzstan and focuses on the drug situation among women. It analyzes reasons for addiction, trends, legislation and anti-drug policies in place. As addicted women are facing barriers when they need support this study highlights the need for, and benefit of, gender-specific services and treatment for women. The authors discuss recommendations, priority directions and measures to improve the situation. Furthermore, survey data from interviews with drug addicted women, workers in healthcare institutions and service providing NGOs are published in the annex.
