Riots in the Stockholm suburb of Husby in spring have sparked a critical public debate in Sweden. Rifts in Swedish society have increased in recent years, being one sign of the pressure that the Swedish welfare model is currently facing. Overall, the Swedish Model is still very much associated with social democracy and the labour movement which shaped Swedish society for much of the 20th century. But in recent years, the conservative coalition also started to lay claim to the concept of the Swedish Model causing an ideological debate and conflict about the meaning of the Swedish Model.
