Zusammenfassung
The book “Bishkek Utopian” is the result of STAB’s project “Bishkek: Chronicles of Radical Imagination” (2014-2015) implemented in the framework of a long-term program of researching Soviet history in Central Asia. The collection of articles includes both theoretical and artistic explorations of the Bishkek history from 1920s to 1970s. First three sections study specific utopian concepts, which led to the construction of certain buildings and structures in the city: “Proletarian Internationalism” (understanding and redefining the work of “Interhelpo” cooperative), “Socialistic City” (history of a soviet micro-district), “Science and Technology” (exploration of buildings and structures, which prove the leading role of science in the USSR). The concept studied in fourth section, “Radical Emancipation”, has not any topographic evidence, but it was documented in works of 1970s mysterious dissident group. The main purpose of the project is to find the material in utopias of the past, which can be used for critical understanding of the present, as well as for radical imagination of the future.
