Abstract
Facing the trend towards a strengthening of populist parties in the EU, this paper seeks to analyse the concept of populism and the reaction of mainstream parties to it. Besides, the positive and negative effects this phenomenon can have on democracy shall be examined. Although mainly focusing on the situation of European populist parties in 2015, it also gives an overview of its development in the past few years and introduces new approaches for the future.
