Zusammenfassung
The ?SSD is the only historically-rooted social democratic party in Central and Eastern Europe to have become the main political force on the left after 1989. In terms of its programme the ?SSD stands closer to the West European social democratic parties than to the other Visegrád countries social democratic parties. Since 2013 the ?SSD has been in government and the ?SSD leader (chairman) has been the Prime Minister. This paper analyses the organisational structure of the party, its programme and development of its position in the Czech party system since 1989. Moreover the paper describes the cooperation with other domestic and international actors. In conclusion the authors of the paper identify the main challenges that are the social democracy in the Czech Republic now facing and give some recommendations to strengthen its position.
