The development of inequality in Europe remains a bone of contention for EU policymakers. This paper argues that in order to assess social conditions in the EU properly it is necessary to look both at the relative and the absolute levels. Relative inequality has barely changed for a number of years. However, if one looks at the absolute differences between the highest and the lowest incomes an alarming increase in inequality can be observed.
