Undoubtedly, the migrant crisis has opened up a whole spectrum of sensitive problems in Europe itself. Scientists, humanitarians, politicians and media workers offered their own explanations of the complex topic. The focus of the interpretations offered ranged from humanitarian moralising, leniency over the absence of acceptance policy, to the threat to national identities, to undermining the geopolitical foundations of Europe. Today it is quite clear that the European narrative has taken a fundamental turn, from a purely humanitarian issue to a security problem. It was the migrant crisis that showed the fragility of the concept of 'European solidarity' that the European Union proudly boasted. The concept served as a normative centripetal tool that was supposed to provide reciprocity in crisis situations, and was also an undisputed 'attractive force' to all potential candidate countries. The migrant crisis has not only caused a profound distortion of solidarity within the European Union, but also among countries awaiting the accession process.
