This paper seeks to examine the role of trade unions in Jordan in protecting workers and developing mechanisms to deal with upheaval in the local labor market that might occur as part of national climate action. The paper examines the UN’s efforts to address climate change, the idea of an energy transition stemming from global commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the components of a just energy transition. The paper provides a brief historical overview of Jordan’s efforts in managing climate change during the last three decades and sheds light on the government’s current climate framework and strategic plans for further climate action. It discusses the effects of climate change on several sectors in Jordan by focusing on the impacts on vulnerable populations. In the last section, the paper outlines the steps that Jordanian trade unions can take to establish and strengthen their role in supporting a just transition.
