Chinas expanding influence in the United Nations (UN) has become a defining feature of todays world politics. In light of the financial and political resources at its disposal, however, Chinas engagement has largely remained moderate and selective. This analysis focusses on Chinas role in the UN development pillar: How and to what extent has Chinas engagement expanded throughout the UN development system, and what are the key characteristics and implications of this expansion? Across selected UN entities and intergovernmental processes, the authors identify four cross-cutting features that currently characterize Chinas approach to UN development work and give insights into Chinas expanding role in the UN development pillar over the last two decades. The analysis concludes with a discussion of the implications of these findings and some recommendations.
