This Toolkit emerges from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung’s long-standing engagement across Southeast Europe and the Western Balkans, where for decades we have worked alongside trade unions, civil society organisations, progressive political actors, and engaged citizens to strengthen democracy, social justice, and social cohesion. It is grounded in a simple but urgent observation: the far right advances not only because of its own organisational strength, but because democratic and progressive alternatives too often fail to connect with people’s lived experiences, insecurities, and aspirations. At a time when exclusionary politics are increasingly normalised, authoritarian tendencies are reframed as pragmatism, and fear is presented as “common sense,” democratic actors require more than abstract analysis or reactive condemnation. They need practical tools, accessible language, and strategies that reconnect politics with everyday life and restore confidence in democratic action.
