In her study, Petra Dünhaupt calculates that potentially more than 6 billion euros in tariffs will be saved from 2018 until 2025, when the European Union - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) enters into force in 2018. In two hypothetical scenarios she amounts the tariff savings under the new trade agreement for all goods imported by the EU from the Vietnamese textile, apparel, footwear, and electronics sector. She concludes that most of the savings will be generated in the apparel and footwear sector. She argues that European buyers will generally benefit most from tariff suspension in free trade agreements because of market concentration in the retail sector which leads to stable consumer prices and negotiation power vis-à-vis the producers. Her research findings are one of the outputs of the regional project Core Labour Standards Plus (CLS+), which was launched by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Asia in 2016.
