Zusammenfassung
Côte dIvoire has ratified most regional and international agreements relating to freedom of expression and has a law which protects freedom of expression and the freedom of the press. ,In spite of this, freedom of expression was seriously affected during the pre- and post-electoral crisis in 2010/2011. Citizens were afraid to speak freely as there were acts of violence and intimidation, particularly against journalists, and some media had their equipment destroyed or were banned from operating.
Generally, the Ivorian media landscape is vibrant and diverse with numerous print media and radio stations. As of April 2012 there were no private television channels. But as the government had finally agreed to allow for these, the country was awaiting the implementation of its decision. Also, most media houses are based in urban centres and media in the rural areas is often not available. The public broadcaster remains under the control of the government. Furthermore, many print media are owned by politicians who directly influence editorial content. Self-censorship in the media is widespread as is corruption. Journalists generally receive very low salaries and suffer from bad working conditions.
