Zusammenfassung
The African Media Barometer (AMB) is an in-depth and comprehensive description and measurement system used to assess the national media environments on the African continent. Unlike other press surveys or media indices the AMB is a self-assessment exercise based on home-grown criteria derived from African protocols and declarations like the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression in Africa (2002) by the African Commission for Human and Peoples Rights. Jointly developed by fesmedia Africa, the Media Project of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) in Africa, and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) in 2004, the AMB is an analytical process that assesses the media situation in any given country which at the same time serves as a practical lobbying tool for media reform. The recommendations of the 2016 Uganda AMB-Reports include, creating synergies with human rights lawyer to offer pro-bono legal services to journalists, combatting corruption in the media especially facilitation and transport fees journalists demand as a condition to receive coverage, advocate and start conversation around the statutory vs. the independent media council as a mechanism to enhance the self-regulation especially around issues of standards and voluntary codes and lastly support media think-tank.
