Dear Friend:
Appreciating your very valuable support of theArbeiter- Wohlfahrt we would like to give you a pictureof the relief work that our organisation has accomplishedthus far with the help of your contributions.
About 3000 lbs. of food and clothing were send tous which we immediately shipped- via CRALOG to theArbeiter- Wohlfahrt in Germany . The fund raising campaignof spring and early summer enabled us to organize thefollowing CRALOG shipments to Germany : 588 cases of foodfor children( including beans, carrots, peas, pudding, fruits, medicines and soap), 40 cases of whole milk,12 cases of powdered eggs, 1200 lbs. of coarse barley, sewing material, men's shoes, and a special shipmentcontaining children's food, including milk and cereal, tohelp maintain a child- feeding program in Munich that isoperated solely by the Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt. In additionwe shipped via CARE- about 100 CARE- Packages to Arbeiter-Wohlfahrt organizations and to needy persons according tolists prepared by the German Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt. In coope-ration with our representative in Sweden and with fraternalorganizations in Switzerland and Belgium we also helpedsupport a special youth- sheltering program operated byArbeiter- Wohlfahrt Koeln.
Due to the conditions in Germany , it is not yetpossible to give an overall survey on the operations ofthe Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt in that country. The centralcommittee of the Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt, whose headquartersare located in Hanover, is preparing such a survey, andwe shall not fail to make it known to you. However, youmay be interested to read some excerpts of a report renderedby the CRALOG- Representative, Robert Kreider, who madea field trip to Hanau to inspect the program of the ArbeiterWohlfahrt in the distribution of CRALOG relief supplies.
Mr. Kreider writes:
" Few cities have I visited in Germany which have suffered such complete devastation as Hanau . Theentire central portion of the city has been leveled tothe ground. Mr. Krause, Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt Hanau , statesthat the pre- war population of Hanau was 45,000 and now is20,000. He added that of 5,300 buildings in the city,4,200 were completely destroyed. This is the setting ofneed within which the Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt serves.
