" I visited Mr. Alfred Krause, Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt, and chairman of the city child feeding program. He report.ed that up until the present child feeding in Hanau hasbeen an operation of the Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt. In Decemberthey began with the feeding of 900 children daily.Indications are that was the first child feeding programto be established in Greater Hesse. During recent monthsan average of 1200 to 1500 children have been fed dailyby this rolief committee, using indigenous supplies.Meals served have been approximately 400 calories. Onedish is served: oatmeal, cereal or soup. When availablemilk has been a constituent part of these meals.Following are statistics on the number fed:

"

April 48,000 rations( Each child receivingaverage 26 meals per month)

May

JuneJuly

27,300 rations( Lacking supplies,

feeding discontinued May 16)

9,000 rations( feeding resumed June 24)30,000( feeding discontinued

August 5 the school will reopen and the childfeeding program will then become a joint operation ofall agencies in Hanau . The major concern is this: Whenare the supplies coming? How much can we count on?Particularly do they emphasize their need for sugar. They have in stock only 380 kg. of sugar, enough for16 days.

" To date Arbeiter- Wohlfahrt has been feeding allof the children in the schools they operate. Ninetypercent of the Hanua children have been found to bemalnourished. The Hanau committee is now wrestling withthe question of whether to continue to feed all children,to feed only three times a week, and so on, Thesequestions are related to the volume of CRALOG supplieswhich they can anticipate.

" Evaluation- One can be confident that Arbeiter-Wohlfahrt in Hanau exercizes good trusteeship for foreignsupplies. They seem to be keenly sensitive to the needsof their area. They have developed systematic proceduresfor distribution and accounting of their relief operations.

Thanking you again for your earlier contributionswe are certain that you will continue to support theArbeiter- Wohlfahrt's relief work while the approachingwinter makes American help a matter of life or death.for hundreds of thousands in Germany .

Fraternally your,

Helmut Wickel
