REDEFINING EUROPE-AFRICA RELATIONS Robert Kappel January 2021 The European Union’s relations with the African continent are facing distinct challenges, with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic making it all the more evident that the prevailing asymmetry is no longer acceptable as we move into the future. This analysis takes a closer look at economic relations between the European Union and Africa, which for some time now have been on a downward trajectory, and addresses the impact of the global pandemic at the same time. Additionally, the paper outlines the current political cooperation between the two continents and evaluates the EU’s recent strategy proposal. Lastly, the key aspects of more comprehensive strategic cooperation between Europe and Africa are identified.
