From the perspective of small and medium-sized enterprises the rise of digital platforms offers both opportunities and new risks. On the one hand, internet platforms open up new sales channels and facilitate access to new customer groups; on the other, the platform operators occupy the position between suppliers and customers and act as gatekeepers who control access to the market and unilaterally determine the business conditions which often do not take sufficient account of the interests of platform users.
