The economic and social policy depredations of austerity have provoked a backlash. Calls from all sides for a social Europe must be exploited politically. In four areas of conflict tracks need to be changed to establish a social dimension in the European Union: From claims of national sovereignty to European policy approaches; from a mode of integration based on market creation to one based on market shaping; from a supply-side to a demand-side economic policy; and from an unjust to a just distribution of wealth and poverty.
