Digitalization is seen as a societal game-changer affecting employment and work, production and income. In a cross-national study, the performance of the innovation systems in Sweden, Germany and Finland are analysed in their quest to benefit from digitalization. The authors call for a widening of innovation policies by understanding digitalization as a social innovation which can enhance social progress. By doing so, they can thwart rising social inequalities.
