Zusammenfassung
As part of our study series "Triumph of the Women? The Female Face of Right-Wing Populism and Extremism" the short study on Italy by Francesca Feo and Anna Lavizzari analyzes the anti-feminist debates of the Italian right.
The defense of the heteronormative, "natural" family plays a particularly important role for the Italian right. In the view of its protagonists and supporters, the family is the central unit for social reproduction and thus the basis of the (Italian) nation. They see low birth rates, for example, as a strong threat to the future and as a consequence of feminism. The right to self-determined life and reproduction should therefore take a back seat to the demands for reproduction of the nation, they argue. As a result, women continue to be ascribed the role of mother and given the main responsibility for care work.
