The FPÖ (Freedom Party of Austria) is Austria's extreme right-wing party; it has been in government four times as a coalition partner and plays a central role in Austrian antifeminism. The party propagates, for example, a biological gender image and tolerates cohabitation only in the heteronormative nuclear family, in which a traditional division of labor prevails. In the FPÖ's election program, for example, and later also in its government program, women appear as mothers only in the context of family policy.
The case study Austria by Judith Goetz is part of our study series "Triumph of Women? The Female Face of Right-Wing Populism and Extremism in Selected Countries" and sheds light on the role of these and other actors in Austrian antifeminism. At the same time, the study shows that strong feminist counter-movements are mobilizing in Austria and defending themselves against the anti-feminist policies of the FPÖ.
